Biography of Sultan Ibrahim ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar Al-Haj

Sultan Ibrahim ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar Al-Haj was born on 22 November 1958 at Sultanah Aminah Hospital, Johor Bahru, Johor. He is the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the 5th modern Sultan of Johor. On 27 October 2023, he was chosen by the Conference of Rulers as the next Yang di-Pertuan Agong, and the oath-taking ceremony was held at Istana Negara on 31 January 2024.

He is the third child and the eldest son among ten siblings of Sultan Iskandar and his mother, Josephine Ruby Trevorrow, an English woman from Torquay, England. They met while Sultan Iskandar (then Tunku Mahmood) was studying in England. Trevorrow later converted to Islam and changed her name to Kalsom binti Abdullah after marrying Tunku Mahmood.

Tunku Ibrahim continued his education at various institutions. He began his schooling at Sekolah Temenggong Abdul Rahman 1. In 1968, he pursued further studies at Trinity Grammar School in Australia for two years. Upon returning to Johor, he attended Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar (MSAB). Additionally, Tunku Ibrahim enrolled at Sekolah Agama Bukit Zaharah and Sekolah Agama Air Molek in Johor Bahru to learn the fundamentals of Islam.

Several years later, Tunku Ibrahim underwent basic military training at the Land Training Centre (Pulada) in Kota Tinggi for three months. He then continued his military education at Fort Benning, Georgia, USA, where he completed the Infantry and Airborne Officers Basic Course. Following this, he attended the Special Forces Officers Course at Fort Bragg, USA. Upon returning, Tunku Ibrahim was appointed Deputy Commander of the Johor Military Force. He earned his pilot wings after completing helicopter training at the Kluang Army Base. Additionally, he completed a two-month training stint with the Royal Malaysian Navy.

As the Crown Prince of Johor

Tunku Ibrahim Ismail was appointed as the Crown Prince of Johor on 3 July 1981 and has resided at Istana Pasir Pelangi since then. He served as the regent of Johor from 26 April 1984 to 25 April 1989 while his father, Sultan Iskandar, was serving as the eighth Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia. In recent years, Tunku Ibrahim has gradually taken on more state duties and responsibilities from his aging father. Notably, he represented his father at the 211 Conference of Rulers, alongside Tunku Abdullah, the Crown Prince of Pahang.

As Yang di-Pertuan Agong

On 27 October 2023, the Conference of Rulers, in its 263 Special Meeting, appointed him as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, succeeding Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, the Sultan of Pahang, whose term will conclude on 30 January 2024. The official oath-taking ceremony and signing of the oath of office were held on 31 January 2024 at Istana Negara.

Sultan Ibrahim married Raja Zarith Sofiah, the daughter of Sultan Idris Al-Mutawakil Alallahi Shah of Perak, in 1982. The couple has been blessed with six children.
